Department of Pharmacology

Welcome to the Department of Pharmacology at Inje University College of Medicine. We currently offer both Masters (M.S.) and Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees courses in the field of Pharmacology, Pharmacogenomics (PGx) and Clinical Pharmacology. Since pharmacology covers a diverse range of human related researches, students having wide range of interests and backgrounds related to the biological sciences can enter the program. It is highly recommended that applicants must have laboratory research experiences or successfully completed prerequisite courses in general chemistry, biology, and pharmacology. Our program provides scholarships to all full-time graduate students and offers financial aid to attend international scientific conferences. Graduate programs are closely aligned and integrated with excellent research expertise of the faculty members from the three major fields as follows:

Pharmacology

The graduate program provides a vibrant and dynamic environment to achieve wide spectrum pharmacological knowledge, professional skills and insights those are needed for students to become strengthen and independent in the field of advance science. Our educational mission is to present various course works that encompass multiple areas of biomedical sciences and research techniques, thus providing an advanced and integrated environment for our students to expand their future career opportunities and success. Collectively Students will particularly learn mechanisms of drug responses at the molecular, cellular, organ and human levels, with an emphasis on pathways by which environmental and genetic factors can cause toxicities or different drug responses. There is a strong and advance state of the art research environment in the department of Pharmacology covering a range of research areas including in vitro research work on PGx, drug metabolism and transporters, PBPK modeling and simulation, in vitro to in vivo extrapolation, cardiovascular, metabolomics, functional genomics and biomarkers for personalized medicine, as well as molecular pharmacology. This comprehensive education with PGx and clinical pharmacology will enable the students to design a research protocol in order to most efficiently achieve their desired goals given the project that students are working within.

Pharmacogenomics

The Pharmacogenomics Research Center (PGRC), as the first institute specialized in PGx research in Korea, is operated conjointly with the Dept of Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacology, and other specializations in Inje University College of Medicine. At this moment, PGRC is highly recognized as a top frontier research institute in the field of PGx and personalized pharmacotherapy worldwide. PGRC Researchers are currently involved in various projects funded by government and pharmaceutical industries, covering drug metabolism and transport, personalized medicine, genotyping chip development, drug interactions, and biomarker discovery. PGRC, as the biggest research unit for PGx in Korea, provides expertise in genome analysis and utilizes up-to-date genotyping technologies for clinical application. PGRC is structured with various faculty members from diverse research backgrounds, enabling the conduct of integrated PGx approaches from molecular to clinical levels, which provides practical and competitive environment for our graduate students.

Clinical Pharmacology

As a bridging science between pharmacology and clinical medicine, the clinical pharmacology addresses the issue of personalized pharmacotherapy. The clinical pharmacology group is not only involved in many of clinical studies to develop the predictive biomarker for the personalized pharmacotherapy but also in the clinical service for the optimum pharmacotherapy such as therapeutic drug monitoring and dose adjustment, pharmacovigilance, genotype guided pharmacotherapy etc. This study program provides opportunity to be familiar with clinical pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of therapeutic drugs. The students will be exposed to the DM/PK, drug assay using instrument, drug interactions studies, TDM, clinical pharmacogenomics, Pop-PK/PD modeling, clinical trials and regulation in drug development, bioethics and many of clinical pharmacology principles. The clinical pharmacology department was established for the translational medical research for the personalized pharmacotherapy along with clinical pharmacology-related service in Inje University Busan Paik Hospital and has been running 4 year residency and 2 year fellowship training program for the physicians in addition to the M.S./Ph.D. Course. The clinical pharmacology department is a core group in developing and managing the clinical trial center (CTC) which was awarded by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2004 and thus students are exposed to pleasant working environment in the clinical trial/research in the drug design and development.
